From an earthwatch volunteer:
Dear BMMS staff
Taking part in the Bahamas Marine Mammal Survey (BMMS) through Earthwatch was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
Not only was I able to take part in the field research, but I met an amazing group of people that I am proud to call my friends in the future.
With this experience, I can bring back different lessons back to the classroom and hopefully motivate my students to take part in conservation efforts.
For eleven days, I helped to survey the surrounding dolphin, sperm whale, and beaked whale populations surrounding Abaco Island.
I saw so many dolphins that I began to be able to recognize them individually upon first sight. Needless to say, I did not think I was going to be able to do that, but it was awesome.
The weather and area were gorgeous as I had a chance to explore the island, not only on boat, but kayaking through the mangroves as well.
Seeing the mammals in their natural environment truly makes a person realize how important it is to maintain a clean and safe environment for them.
Talks of a marina being built on the island are saddening because it will dramatically affect the unique ecosystem around Abaco.
The staff and other volunteers made the expedition enjoyable. If I was researching with the wrong people, the trip could have been a pain, but they were friendly, yet focused on conservation.
My only regret about the expedition is that it did not last longer. Thank you for providing me with the highlight of my summer.
Sincerely,
JR Argo
